Accidents and sicknesses happen everyday, when we least expect it. Consider the following if such an accident were to happen to you, and you were unable to go to work tomorrow:

Disability insurance eases your financial burden if such an illness or accident were to happen to you, so you can concentrate completely on your recovery, rather than worrying about where your next bill will come from. Benefits and features of disability insurance include:

  1. 24-hour coverage for injury or illness
  2. Loss of Income Benefit, in which you receive a portion of your regular income on a monthly basis (can be based on your Gross Business Revenue or Net Earned Income)
  3. Loss of Income Benefits will be paid from date of injury to a maximum of 70 years of age for most occupations; 5-year benefit period is also available for eligible occupations
  4. Partial Disability Benefit (50% benefits for up to 180 days)
  5. Return to Work Assistance Benefit (provides rehabilitation and financial assistance to help you return to work)
  6. Waiver of premium (30 days after total disability and when benefits become payable)
  7. Accident Medical Reimbursement Benefit (pays for expenses up to $10,000 for medical expenses which are not covered by provincial plans)

 

How do I determine my Loss of Income Benefit amount?

Your monthly benefit is determined by how much income you make, and how you make it, as well as your Qualifying Insurable Monthly Earnings at the time of disability. The following guidelines can help you determine how much you can expect to receive (every month) in the event of an illness or injury:

  1. If you are an employee, you can cover 75% of your employment income

 

  1. If you are self-employed, you receive either:

       - 75% of 50% of Prior Average Gross Business Revenue, or
       - 75% of Prior Average Net Earned Income

  1. If you work under contract, you receive 75% of Prior Average Gross Business Revenue

 

Optional Benefits

The following benefits are optional, and may be added to your coverage at the time of purchase:

  1. Business Overhead Expense Coverage
  1. How long could your business survive, were you to become temporarily disabled? This coverage reimburses a business for overhead expenses in such an event.
  2. You receive up to 12 times the monthly benefit

 

  1. Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage
  1. A lump sum payment of $100,000, $200,000, or $300,000 in the case of accidental death
  1. Out-of-Province Emergency Medical Coverage (especially for frequent travellers)
  1. You receive coverage up to $5,000,000 for unexpected emergency medical expenses, should you become ill or injured while travelling out of your province
  2. Services covered include hospital accommodation, physician fees, diagnostic services, paramedical services, ambulance services, emergency air transportation, and more; 24-hour International Assistance Service available
  3. You are covered for unlimited trips within your coverage period (maximum 30 days per trip)
